Sifting through the Static: Moving Object Detection in Difference Images

Abstract Trans-Neptunian objects provide a window into the history of solar system, but they can be challenging to observe due their distance from Sun and relatively low brightness. Here we report detection 75 moving that could not link any other known objects, faintest which has VR magnitude 25.02 ± 0.93 using Kernel-Based Moving Object Detection (KBMOD) platform. We recover an additional 24 sources with previously orbits. place constraints on barycentric distance, inclination, longitude ascending node these objects. The unidentified have median 41.28 au, placing them in outer system. observed inclination distribution all detected is consistent published KBO distributions. describe extensions KBMOD, including robust percentile-based lightcurve filter, in-line graphics-processing unit new coadded stamp generation, convolutional neural network allow KBMOD take advantage difference images. These enhancements mark significant improvement readiness for deployment future big data surveys such as LSST.
